Andrew Miki,
Ph.D., R.Psych.
Dr. Andrew Miki (www.mentalfitness.ca) is a registered psychologist who specializes in:
1. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
2. Neuropsychological Assessment
3. Neurorehabilitation
Dr. Miki specializes in the assessment and treatment of Mood Disorders (Major Depressive Disorder; Bipolar Disorder), Anxiety Disorders (Generalized Anxiety Disorder; Panic Disorder; Social Anxiety Disorder; Posttraumatic Stress Disorder), and Traumatic Brain Injuries. He uses CBT to teach patients an active and empowering approach to their psychological treatment. Much like physical fitness, people can learn and practice exercises to maximize their mental health, independence, and functioning. These strategies are evidence-based and widely accepted by both the psychological and medical communities. Dr. Miki generally sees patients on a short-term basis (i.e. 8-15 sessions).
Dr. Miki also conducts Independent Psychological Assessments that include neuropsychological and psychodiagnostic assessments.
With his unique expertise in neuropsychology and CBT, Dr. Miki provides treatment and neurorehabilitation to individuals with neurological disorders (i.e. Traumatic Brain Injury, Mild Cognitive Impairment, Multiple Sclerosis, Amnesia). By integrating evidence-based memory rehabilitation and CBT, Dr. Miki can help patients adjust to life following the diagnosis of a neurological disorder. Dr. Miki was a guest lecturer at a provincial conference for brain injuries for several years where he presented neurorehabilitation strategies.
Dr. Miki received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from York University, Toronto. His dissertation examined the relationship between neuropsychological functioning and schizophrenia. He completed his doctoral residency at Baycrest Hospital where he received training in neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation. He completed a doctoral rotation in CBT for depression and another doctoral rotation in neuropsychological assessment at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Dr. Miki also worked for two years as a research therapist for a clinical trial at York University that demonstrated the effectiveness of CBT for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The results from this study were published in a peer reviewed scientific journal (Journal of Anxiety Disorders, 2009). In addition to his private practices, Dr. Miki recently worked on a scientific research project with BC Mental Health and Addiction Services to evaluate evidence-based treatments that are designed to prevent the relapse of depression. |
