Psychologists

Andrew Miki, Ph.D., R.Psych.

Dr. Andrew Miki (www.mentalfitness.ca) is a registered psychologist who specializes in:
1. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
2. Neuropsychological Assessment
3. Neurorehabilitation

Dr. Miki specializes in the assessment and treatment of stress, depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Schizophrenia. He uses CBT to teach patients an active and empowering approach to their psychological treatment. Much like physical fitness, people can learn and practice exercises to maximize their mental health, independence, and functioning. These strategies are evidence-based and widely accepted by both the psychological and medical communities.

Dr. Miki also conducts neuropsychological assessments to evaluate problems in brain functioning. Unlike CT or MRI brain scans, neuropsychological testing examines how well the brain is functioning when it performs specific tasks (i.e. paying attention, remembering information). One of the most common reasons for using this type of assessment is to assess problems with attention, memory, and planning/organization experienced by some people with neurological disorders such as a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Following the assessment, Dr. Miki can provide a diagnosis and outline strengths and weakness to help guide rehabilitation and clinical patient management.

With his unique expertise in neuropsychology and CBT, Dr. Miki provides treatment and neurorehabilitation to individuals with neurological disorders (i.e. TBI, Mild Cognitive Impairment, Multiple Sclerosis, Amnesia). By integrating evidence-based memory rehabilitation and CBT, Dr. Miki can help patients adjust to life following the diagnosis of a neurological disorder.

In addition to his private practice, Dr. Miki works on a scientific research project with BC Mental Health and Addiction Services to evaluate evidence-based treatments that are designed to prevent the relapse of depression.

Dr. Miki received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from York University, Toronto. His dissertation examined the relationship between neuropsychological functioning and schizophrenia. He completed his doctoral residency at Baycrest Hospital where he received training in neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation. He completed two doctoral rotations at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) with a focus on CBT for depression and neuropsychological assessment. Dr. Miki also worked for two years as a research therapist for a clinical trial at York University that demonstrated the effectiveness of CBT for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The results from this study were published in a peer reviewed scientific journal (Journal of Anxiety Disorders, 2009).
