1. What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

The aim of CBT is to help people make positive changes in their life. This includes reducing distressing symptoms or preventing them from getting worse. This has been found to be effective in the treatment of a wide range of disorders, including anxiety, stress-related conditions, depression and chronic pain.

· The cognitive side of CBT focuses on learning about yourself, especially about the connections between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviour.

· The behavioural side of CBT includes strengthening coping strategies that are working well for a person and teaching additional strategies.

· CBT tends to be short term and focuses on the here and now; what I can do right now to help me feel better and stay better.

· CBT is a collaborative process; you work as a team with your therapist to set and work towards goals.

2. How can an appointment be arranged?

Call our office at 604-985-3939 or long distance at 1-866-985-3535.  In some cases, appointments with therapists, psychologists, and dietitians can be made within one week.

3. Is there a long waiting list?

Clients wanting to book ongoing or follow-up appointments with our therapists can usually arrange their next visit within a week or two.

4. Why do some clients have appointments with the registered nurse?

The NSSAC registered nurse sees clients who are self referred, or referred by one of the psychiatrists or psychologists to consult and follow in coordination with the therapist. Her specialty is weight management and nutrition counseling. Some psychiatric medications and antidepressants have side effects of weight gain and altered metabolism. The nurse’s dietary advice can assist clients with health improvement and reduction of adverse side effects.

The fee for the weight management appointments with the registered nurse is not covered by MSP and is currently paid by the client at $30 per half hour.

5. What types of referrals are not suitable for the NSSAC?
We do not currently accept referrals for clients who require therapy for psychotic disorders.

6. Are services at NSSAC covered by the provincial Medical Services Plan (MSP)?

Consultation appointments with psychiatrists are covered by the Medical Service Plan (MSP). A medical referral is required for these appointments.  MSP does not extend to the other health care providers at NSSAC.

Individuals with extended health benefit plans (e.g., Blue Cross) may have some or all of their sessions with therapists, psychologists, or dietitians covered. Clients are encouraged to contact their health benefit provider for more information.

7. What is the fee for treatment, and what forms of payment do you accept?

Fees are $160 per session for PhD trained therapists, and $175 per session for visits with registered psychologists.  Other services, such as consultation with our registered nurse are charged at a different rate. Please inquire by phone.

We accept payment by cash, cheque or credit card.

8. Are there appointments later in the day?

Some appointments may be available weekdays at 5:00 or 6:00 pm.

9. Can I reschedule an appointment?

We are happy to reschedule your appointment to a more convenient time.  Please be aware that some therapists require notice to be provided one full business day in advance.  Missed sessions may be charged at the regular rate.  This policy enables us to book other clients during the time made vacant.

10. Are the issues discussed during my appointment discussed with anyone else?
Information discussed with your therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist or nurse is confidential.  In some specific cases (e.g., treatment of a minor) there are limits to confidentiality, and these limits will be discussed at your first session.  With your consent, we may contact your insurer or family physician as appropriate.

11. How long might treatment last, and how often are appointments?

Clients typically attend weekly for one hour. However the frequency and length of your appointments will be tailored to specific needs.  Some clients come every few weeks and clients traveling a great distance often have longer appointments (e.g. two hours at a time, or two appointment days in a row, before returning home until the next set of appointments).  The length of therapy may vary substantially depending on the severity of symptoms and number of conditions being treated. Many people are able to obtain significant benefits after 8 to 20 sessions.  Some clients require more long-term intervention.  Both short and long-term therapy is available as needed at NSSAC.

12. How does therapy work to reduce my anxiety symptoms?

We utilize evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) which has been shown to be effective for anxiety disorders and other disorders.

13. How do I make an appointment? Is a referral necessary?
A medical referral is required to schedule an appointment with one of our psychiatrists.  All other appointments can be made by calling our clinic directly.

14. What types of referrals are suitable for the NSSAC?

NSSAC accepts clients of all ages that struggle with stress, anxiety, or trauma related problems. We also accept referrals for adults coping with disordered eating.

15. Is group therapy offered?

Group therapy is offered for parents of anxious young children between the ages of 3-8 on Wednesdays at 1pm.  Another group will be available for teens with uncomplicated anxiety conditions such as generalized anxiety, panic and social anxiety.  Call the clinic to register or for more information about the groups.
